Outdoor Learning 2024

Outdoor Learning at ESJ - What we do best!

In a nutshell, we at ESJ understand the value, inspiration and power of the natural world. Our connection to nature is vital – it gives us perspective and joy and asks nothing in return other than kindness.

We are very fortunate at ESJ to have many developed and carefully planned outdoor spaces which support our school curriculum. We use several outdoor zones to enrich our teaching as well as to relax and play in. Pupils learn to take risks, stay safe and build their nature awareness.

We use the wood circle area to teach cooking skills, conduct science experiments and replicate aspects of history. We have LOTS of outdoor cooking resources. Bushcraft and general outdoor skills are also taught in this zone.

The allotment area is for curriculum related food growing projects. We cook much of our produce in the wood circle. We also run family sessions to teach the wider community. It is an award winning garden (we have won every year since its opening).

Near the allotment we have a new Compost area. Our school fruit waste is used to support our growing projects.

The Mound area is a wild area near the allotment. We are currently planting fruit trees around this to encourage more wildlife.

The nature garden is intended as a wild area - it is an area for observation and reflection. We have many nesting birds here including sparrow hawks. This is beautiful space which has recently had a Victorian style gate and arch fitted at the entrance.

We receive many generous donations and financial grants (Needham’s Foundation in particular) to maintain this area. Parent working sessions at weekends run throughout the year and allow us to develop new projects. This year we are continuing to replace raised beds – some of which are fourteen years old!

Den building zones. We have two the spinney areas. Here we create forest art and build dens. It allows for forest play.
